The federal government is moving to give Montana and other western states greater authority to manage grizzly bears.
The Interior Department announced a revised proposal July 14 that would allow more state flexibility in areas where grizzly populations have met or exceeded federal recovery benchmarks. Supporters say local wildlife officials are better positioned to respond to bear conflicts involving ranchers, recreationists and communities.
The proposal does not remove grizzlies from the Endangered Species Act, and hunting seasons would not immediately be allowed. Federal protections would remain in place while states gain more control over management decisions.
