As Memorial Day Weekend approaches and summer travel ramps up, local law enforcement agencies across Gallatin County are stepping up patrols with one clear message: don’t drink and drive.
During a recent conversation on the KSKY Morning Show with Dave Wooten, local leaders discussed increased DUI enforcement efforts and the very real consequences impaired driving has on the community. Joining the discussion were Bozeman Police Chief Jim Veltkamp, Belgrade Police Chief Dustin Lensing, Gallatin County Sheriff Dan Springer, Lt. Dana McNeil with the Montana State University Police Department, and Tim Martindale from Gallatin County 911.
Officials emphasized that Memorial Day marks the unofficial start of summer — a season often associated with increased travel, celebrations, and unfortunately, impaired driving incidents. Extra patrols will be visible throughout the region as agencies work together to reduce crashes and keep roads safe.
Law enforcement leaders stressed that a DUI doesn’t just impact the driver. It can devastate families, burden emergency responders, and leave lasting scars across the community. Their message was simple: make a plan before heading out. Use a designated driver, rideshare, or call a friend.
